When you are moving across the globe on travel, the best way for constant communication with your associates, kith and kin would be your cell phone. However while using the cell phone you will require the SIM Card that could be either zone specific or international. But you can not just insert a new SIM Card in your cell phone and use it. You require your cell phone to be unlocked for the purpose.

- The substitute network might be less expensive compared to the network you are using.

- If you desire to sell your handset and have a new one your SIM may not work in it and you will require a phone that is unlocked.
Checking whether your phone is locked –
You may be wondering that how could you find out whether your phone is locked. Different networks will display different messages when you try to insert SIM Card not compatible to your phone. For example the Nokia will display “SIM Card rejected” while Sony Ericsson will display the message “Incorrect SIM Card”. Samsung will display “Invalid Network SIM” and Motorola will ask “Enter special code”. In brief an error message will invariably be displayed on your cell phone screen when you try such insertions.
When you cannot access a SIM Card from a different network then you may use a crude method to check whether your handset is locked. Find out whether the network has placed their logo on your cell phone. Some of the networks badge the cell phone with their logo either in the front or on the back. This will clearly indicate that your mobile phone is customized and locked for other networks.
Is unlocking legal?
Yes, unlocking is legal since you are the owner of your cell phone and has got the veritable right to use any of the networks according to your convenience. Rather locking the phone is illegal. You may at any time exercise your consumer rights to unlock the cell phone you are possessing. The network providing you the phone is bound to provide you the unlock code. The only cliché is that the code will cost you around 35 pounds in UK or nearly 75 dollars in USA.
