If you are a cigar enthusiast, you must be aware of the importance of humidors. As the food is preserved from rotting through refrigeration; to preserve your pricey, hard-to-come by Cuban cigars, humidors are essential cigar accessories. Humidors are used to maintain the humidity to optimum levels surrounding cigars.

Humidors are not just other boxes

Though they may look similar to ordinary boxes, but these cigar humidors are made of wood with interior carved out of beautiful Spanish cedar. A perfect humidor is really far from being just a wooden box. Though cigar humidors are mainly used for storing process, these are also used for maintaining and just like wine, aging cigars. Many times people even use them as a valuable family asset that passes from generation to generation.

Made to provide perfect humidity

At room temperature between 68-77 degrees Fahrenheit, to store cigars the ideal humidity range is 68% to 72%. A humidor consist a hygrometer to measure the humidity inside the box. It maintains optimal humidity required by inserting or removing moisture inside the box.

Got a humidor, it’s time to season it

So, you have bought yourself a humidor. You shouldn’t immediately store your cigars in your humidor. New humidors must be seasoned first before you start storing your costly Cuban cigars. Since humidors add humidity that is essential to cigars, if you don’t season it, cigars will tend to dry out soon. It’s because the new wood absorb the moisture thereby making them dry.

How to season your humidor?

Seasoning provides your humidor with an atmosphere similar to that of tropical weather. It’s the region where majority of cigars are manufactured. Want to season your humidor, follow these steps:

  • Soak sponge into distilled water. Using soap, detergents or scents is not advisable. Similarly, use of tap water is also avoidable as it contains minerals that may damage interiors of the humidor.
  • Wipe all exposed wood completely including the inside of the lid and dividers. Don’t use fraying cloth or towels as these could also damage the wood of your humidor.
  • Spray distilled water on the sponge for additional water; put this wet sponge inside the humidor on top of the plastic bag. It’s essential as plastic bag keeps the sponge from touching the wood directly.
  • After the humidifying instrument is put on place, it should be wiped down. Then, rest it on a hand towel for about half an hour.
  • Now once the wet sponge and humidifying tool are placed inside, close the humidor lid for a night.
  • Next day, refresh that humidifying tool and if the sponge is dry, add some distilled water to it as well.
  • Leave it for another night and then take out the plastic bag and the sponge.

In this way your humidors are perfect to keep your costly cigars well-protected and at optimum level inside a seasoned humidor.
