Recently a rumor circulated via email that suggested that a New Mexico woman's death was the result of consuming Vitamin Water, a popular vitamin-enhanced sport beverage manufactured by Coca Cola. The rumor is absolutely false. The woman's death is unexplained but nothing suggests that she was the victim of a contaminated product.
The Internet is a tremendous source of information on products and product research, but not all information sources are credible. In the case of rumors regarding this woman's death, the rumor asks the reader to make a leap of logic from the fact that the woman had been drinking Vitamin Water to the fact that she somehow came into contact with ethylene glycol, a substance found in antifreeze and paints. There is no evidence to suggest that the Vitamin Water she was drinking was the source of the ethylene glycol. In fact, the woman began drinking Vitamin Water because she had fallen ill. She was already exhibiting symptoms of illness when she started drinking Vitamin Water.
Vitamin Water contains a number of nutrients the human body requires, like potassium, calcium and magnesium, along with some B-complex vitamins. These nutrients are used or lost by the body during physical activity and need to be replenished on a regular basis. With regard to the formulation of Vitamin Water, there is nothing unusual or out of the ordinary about the product. Even consuming large amounts of the beverage would not result in a toxic exposure to any of its ingredients. With the exception of potassium and calcium, the body doesn't store excesses of any other nutrients found in Vitamin Water.
If you find product-related rumors, such as this one, it's good to do your own research before reaching any conclusions. Given that Vitamin Water is produced by the Coca Cola Company, any deaths, injuries or illnesses attributed to its products would be widely reported and investigated. None of this has happened and no other individuals have reported illnesses of any kind associated with consuming Vitamin Water. In the absence of any evidence to the contrary, you can rest assured that Vitamin Water is a healthy, nutritious and safe sport beverage.
